Rivers traders risk death under high-tension wires

Four years after a high-tension electric wire fell on two buses at Slaughter Bus-stop in Port Harcourt killing over 20 persons, Southern City News have observed that traders now sell their wares under the deadly wires.
The 2010 tragedy had left sad memories in the minds of Port Harcourt residents who saw the charred remains of the electrocuted victims inside two buses. It made many to keep long distance away from the wires.
But in recent times, our correspondent has seen crowds under high-tension electric wires at Rumueme selling, buying, reading and discussing newspaper headlines. There were also those selling drinks.
A newspaper vendor, who identified herself as Charity, told Southern City News that though some of the people under the wires were not aware of the danger, she claimed she was aware, but had not alternative.
She argued that the lack of space and government’s inability to provide space for them had made it difficult to avoid selling under the wires.
She noted that since no task force had been harassing them for selling under the high tension cables, it would be difficult for any of the concerned traders to quit.
“We do not have space to sell our goods and that is why we want government to provide space where we can do business without anybody harassing us.

“We are here selling, but some of us are not even aware of the risk of selling under the high-tension wire, but we have to survive through what we are doing now,” Charity added.
The situation is the same in Garrison, Mile One, and Trans-Amadi areas of Port Harcourt as traders still gather under high-tension electricity installations to sell.
Speaking on the matter, one of the prospective buyers at Rumueme, Mr. Justice Ihunda, urged the government to provide safety nets around the high-tension wires to protect the citizens.
Ihunda said Nigeria should go beyond naked wire installations, stressing that underground electricity installation should be adopted for the safety of the citizenry.
Advising Port Harcourt residents, the Head of Corporate Communications, of Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, Mr. Jonah Ibomah, told Southern City News that it was necessary for residents, especially traders to avoid doing business under such dangerous facilities.
Ibomah recalled how 20 persons were killed by a high tension cable that fell on two buses, stressing that traders should stay away from PHCN installations to avoid a repeat of the ugly incident that happened in 2010 at the Slaughter Bus-stop.
“It is one of the things we have been crying about, especially this season of safety. Electricity installations remain very dangerous and people should not play around them, but stay far from them.
“You can recall that a few years back in Port Harcourt, over 20 people were killed by a single electric wire that fell.
“We want to appeal to those selling under high tension electricity installations to desist from it because it is for .Residents at one of the danger zones

EFCC re-arraigns Sylva for N2.45bn fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday re-arraigned a former governor of Bayelsa State, Mr. Timipre Sylva, before a Federal High Court in Abuja for fraud involving about N2.45bn.
The accused allegedly committed the offence between October 2009 and February 2010 as governor of Bayelsa State.
He pleaded not guilty to all the six counts when he was re-arraigned before Justice Evoh Chukwu on Monday.
The former governor also has similar charges pending against him before Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Sylva had earlier pleaded not guilty to Monday’s six counts when he was first arraigned for the offences before Justice Adamu Bello (retd.) on June 5, 2012.
The matter had to start de novo (afresh) following the retirement of Justice Bello, a development which prompted Sylva’s re-arraignment before Justice Chukwu on Monday.
The prosecuting counsel, Mr. Festus Keyamo, who signed the charges, accused Sylva of offences, including conversion of various sums of money belonging to the state with the aim of concealing their illicit origins.
Sylva was accused of knowing the illegal sources of the money and allegedly converted the funds through the bank accounts of a Bureau de Change operator, a company and other individuals in order to conceal their illicit origin.
He was also accused of inducing Union Bank Plc to fraudulently grant him N2bn overdraft facility under the pretext of using the money to augment workers’ salary.
He allegedly committed the offences in conspiracy with other unnamed persons said to be at large.
In the first count, the EFCC alleged that between October 2009 and February 2010, the former governor conspired with other unnamed persons to convert “property and resources amounting to N2bn belonging to Bayelsa State Government, derived from an illegal act with the aim of concealing the illicit origin of the said amount. ”
In the second count, the EFCC alleged that on January 22, 2010, Sylva converted a sum of N380m, property of Bayelsa State Government, “through the account of one Habibu Sani Maigidia, a Bureau de Change operator with Account No. 221433478108 in Fin Bank Plc, which sum you knew represented the proceeds of an illegal act with the aim of concealing the nature of the proceeds of the said illegal act.”
The third count accused the former governor of converting N50m belonging to his state “through the account of one Enson Benmer Limited with Account No. 6152030001946 in First Bank Plc, which sum you knew represented the proceeds of an illegal act with the aim of concealing the nature of the proceeds of the said illegal act. ”
The fourth count alleged that the accused, on January 5, 2010, converted the sum of N20m belonging to Bayelsa State, “through the account of one John Daukoru, with Account No. 04800250000418 in United Bank of Africa Plc, which sum you knew represented the proceeds of an illegal act with the aim of concealing the nature of the proceeds of the said illegal act.”
EFCC said the offence in the first count is contrary to provisions of section 17(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition Act), 2004, and the offences in counts two or four are said to be contrary to and punishable under Section 14(1) of the same Act.
In counts five and six, the former governor was accused of conspiring with others to induce Union Bank Plc and actually inducing the bank “with the intent to defraud, to grant an overdraft facility of the sum of N2bn under the false pretence of using the amount to augment salaries of the Bayelsa State Government.”
The conspiracy offence in count five was said to be contrary to provisions of section 8(a) of the Advanced Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act 2004 and punishable under section 1(3) of the same Act.
After the arraignment on Monday, Justice Chukwu granted bail to Sylva on conditions and terms previously granted by the former trial judge.
The oral bail application by Sylva’s lawyer, Israel Olorundare (SAN), was not opposed by the prosecuting counsel from Keyamo’s law firm, Mr. John Ainetor.
Ainetor had only urged the court to grant the bail, if it was willing to do so in terms that would secure the availability of the accused person in court.
The court fixed May 25 for commencement of trial.

Fire injures seven, guts 109 shops in Lagos

No fewer than seven persons sustained varying degrees of injuries in a Sunday night inferno which gutted more than 109 shops and residential buildings in Ijora Area of Lagos State.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the fire was said to have started from one of the shops at the 7up area of Ijora, where black oil was stored.
Confirming the incident, the South-West Zonal spokeman of the National Emergency Maintenance Agency, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, said the affected buildings belong to the Bayelsa Government.
“About 109 shops and residential buildings were consumed in the fire outbreak at the scene, located in open space belonging to the Bayelsa State Government besides the 7up Bottling Company, Ijora.
“One person who sustained serious burns was rescued and taken to the hospital.
“The fire started from a shop filled with drums of black oil. People are also using the space as residence,”  he said.
NAN recalls that early in the year, two people were burnt to death in an early morning fire that ravaged no fewer than 10 buildings, including a brothel in Ijora.
The inferno, which occurred on Jan 15, also destroyed millions of naira worth of property.
Several people, mostly sex workers and their customers were also injured during the attempts by occupants to escape from the fierce fire in the brothel.

The deceased persons were identified simply as John and Yaro and they were reportedly sleeping in one of the burnt buildings, when the fire started.
Attempts by fire fighters from Iganmu Fire Service Station to put out the fire were blocked by irate hoodlums, who were reportedly seizing the opportunity to loot.
The fire was said to have started following a power surge from one of the affected buildings and spread rapidly because of the nature of the wooden houses.

My ministers and I’ll face persecution – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan has given an insight into the fate that awaits him and his ministers   after May 29, saying he believes they will be persecuted.
He stated on Sunday during   a thanksgiving and farewell service organised in his honour at the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Life Camp, Gwarinpa, Abuja that the persecution would happen   because of the “ hard decisions” his administration took while in office.
Jonathan told the congregation that he understood clearly that “ hard decisions” had their own cost and was therefore   ready to pay any price for them
He   said that experience had shown him that people would at a time desert anybody who took   “hard decisions” like he did while in office.
Jonathan added   that he had always   believed that more of his friends would desert him after May 29.
The President recalled the story of the last ruler of apartheid South Africa, Frederik   de Klerk, who was divorced by his wife for accepting to abolish minority rule in the country, and said jokingly that he hoped his wife, Patience,   would not also divorce him after the end of his tenure on May 29.
Beaming with smiles, Mrs. Jonathan, who on March 16 declared that she was not ready to feed her husband in prison, replied with a shout of “Nooooo.”
Her response was greeted with a loud applause by congregation members.
The President   said, “I believe there are reasons for everything. Some hard decisions have their own cost; and there is no doubt about that.
“That I have run the government this way that stabilised certain things, the electoral process and other things that brought stability to this country. They are very costly decisions which I must be ready to pay for.
“Some people come to me and say this or that person, is he not your friend that benefitted? Is it not your government that this person benefitted from? But this is what the person is saying.
“But I used to say that worse statements will come. If you take certain decisions, you should know that those close to you will even abandon you at some point.
“And I tell them that more of my so-called friends will disappear. When de Klerk took the decision to abolish minority rule in South Africa, even his wife divorced him. I hope my wife will not divorce me. But that is the only decision that has made South Africa to be a global player now. If they still   have minority rule,   by this time, nobody will be talking about them.
“If you take certain decisions, it might be good for many but it might affect others differently. So, for ministers and   aides who served with me, I sympathise with them because they will be persecuted. They must be ready for persecution.
“Quoting Tai Solarin, may your ways be rough, I say to   my ministers, I wish you what I wish myself. They will have hard times, we will all have hard times. Our ways will be rough.”
Jonathan however said he was happy that ordinary Nigerians appreciated what he did and that, according to him, is most important.
He said it was not what the elite talk about or say about his administration that mattered to him but what the majority of the Nigerians felt about his actions and inactions.
The President expressed delight that he came to Abuja with his family peacefully and was leaving peacefully.
Jonathan also looked back at all the benefits that had came his way as a Nigerian, saying he was ready to pay the supreme price for the nation.
He said considering what God had done in his life, he wished he could dance like the biblical King David.
Jonathan said, “I want to thank God for what he has done for me and my family. I wish to dance more than David, if I tried to dance, I missed my steps.
“I have all the reasons to thank God. Very few of those in my age bracket have been that lucky. All through my education, I was on government scholarship. I have not suffered lack not because I am hardworking, but it has been God’s grace.
“When I look at the whole picture of my life up to when I became the President of this country, I say that if soldiers and policemen that have not received 0.5 per cent of the benefits that I have had from the state can lay down their lives for this country, I should do anything in the interest of Nigeria, including paying the supreme price.
“As long as live, I will continue to do my best for the state because the state has helped me as a person.
“I have to thank Nigerians, especially the people of my state(Bayelsa) for giving me the opportunity to serve as deputy governor. I thank all Nigerians   who gave me the opportunity to serve as Vice President and President. I had their support to   complete the tenure of the late president(Umaru Yar’Adua) and later serve as President from which I am exiting now as a very happy and fulfilled man.”
The President also thanked the church   for standing by him even at his most difficult times.
He said even on the March 28 presidential election which he lost to Buhari, there were many people who supported him nationwide.
Jonathan promised to continue to pray for the country and the incoming government of Muhammadu Buhari .
He said that Buhari won the March 28 election   because God wanted it to be so.
The President added, “Even for the election, we had people who supported us all over the country but things went the way they did because God wanted them that way for a purpose.
“We will continue to pray for the peace of the country and for the success of the incoming administration.
“When the country is in good shape, people benefit. When things are going well, people are happy. You don’t need to know Mr. President or Mr. Governor.
“The issue is not about Jonathan or Buhari or any other person. The issue is how the government functions in terms of stability and a buoyant economy that will enable Nigerians to move forward and live happily. That is our interest; that is my prayer point.
“All religious groups should pray for the country.”
Jonathan thereafter requested that his favourite him, “Stand by me” be sang again.
He said apart from inspiring him, the hymn “makes him to be aware of the fact that whatever one does, there will always be storms.”
Earlier, a former Minister of Information,   Jerry Gana, said Jonathan was favoured by God in many ways.
Gana thanked God for what Jonathan was able to achieve during his tenure.
The former minister, who headed the President’s fundraising committee during electioneering , said “Jonathan is a man of favour. He is highly favoured by God. We thank God for what He has done for Nigeria through him.
“Despite the big positions he occupied in the country, he has remained humble and he has succeeded in deepening democracy in the country.
“He revived the rail system; he brought back hope to Nigeria and to cap it all; he conceded defeat to his opponent in a heroic manner.”
The Minister of Power, Chinedu Nebo, also praised the President while reeling out some of his unique qualities and achievements in office.
He said, “He (Jonathan) is humane, gentle and unassuming. He has transformed Nigeria. He is not vindictive. He loves the youth. He empowered, mentored and motivated youths and women.
“He is a listening leader. He listens to everyone in the Federal Executive Council before passing judgment. He fixed the electoral process and brought credibility to it. He is Nigeria’s greatest leader.”
In his sermon entitled, “Thanksgiving,” the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Most Revd. Nicholas Okoh, said although Jonathan was leaving office as President, the world would still need his services in different capacities.
Okoh said leaving office at this time did not translate to the fact that Jonathan had expired.
He explained that what happened to the President was that he had graduated into a class of statesmen and women.
Turning to the President, the clergyman said, “You have graduated and entered the distinguished class of statesmen and women.“In your new office, you are a peacemaker. Nigeria, Africa, the black world and the world will need you. You are relevant; you have just started; you have not expired.”
He recalled that at the inception of his administration, Jonathan did a similar thing by giving thanks to God.
Okoh   thanked God for the President’s contributions to the growth of the country, adding that some of the projects he initiated had been completed while others are at advanced stages.
He said, “Whatever stage the projects may be, generations yet unborn will read about Jonathan that he governed from so so time to so so time.
“It will be studied by our children in history books. So, we should thank God.
“Again, you are leaving the (Presidential) Villa alive. Only God knows what would have happened. There is nothing greater than life.
“We give thanks for what God did through you in your distressed situation. Your humility saved lives and our enemies were disappointed. There were many people who came and pretended to be your friends, but were sadists. They came with cameras recording, but were disappointed.
“What God is doing in your life you may not understand, it might take years, but you need to be patient to understand because deeper meaning of the event will unfold later.”
Nigerians misunderstood Jonathan’s calmness –Okupe
Meanwhile, the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Public Affairs,   Doyin Okupe, has said Nigerians misunderstood the President’s   calmness for indecisiveness.
Okupe,   on his facebook page on Sunday, said     “In a few days, President Jonathan will bow out of office gracefully and graciously.
“President Jonathan has done well and served his country well. He exits office as a great President; perhaps Nigeria’s greatest President for all times. Greater than the best before him. He excelled in achievements, in humility, tranquility and simplicity.
“Nigerians misunderstood meekness for weakness, Restraint for lack of strength, reticence for inaction and calmness for indecisiveness.”
Okupe said that history would judge Jonathan   differently, adding that he(Jonathan) would “be remembered as a great man, a good man, humble and humane, purposeful and focused. A great African hero who fought against all manners of evil and conspiracies: Religious, ethnic, national and international, and lost the war.
“But ultimately, he triumphed because of the inherent goodness that God Almighty deposited in Him.”
The presidential aide urged Nigerians not to weep for Jonathan but “rather   pray that our nation will remain, united and stable; that its people will prosper and that God will guide our incoming leaders.”

Scientists monitor undersea volcanic eruption off Oregon coast

By Courtney Sherwood
PORTLAND, Ore. (Reuters) - An undersea volcano about 300 miles (480 km) off Oregon's coast has been spewing lava for the past seven days, confirming forecasts made last fall and giving researchers unique insight into a hidden ocean hot spot, a scientist said on Friday.
Researchers know of two previous eruptions by the volcano, dubbed "Axial Seamount" for its location along the axis of an underwater mountain ridge, Oregon State University geologist Bill Chadwick said on Friday. But those 1998 and 2011 eruptions were detected months or years afterward, Chadwick added.
Last year, researchers connected monitoring gear to an undersea cable that, for the first time, allowed them to gather live data on the volcano, whose peak is about 4,900 feet (1,500 meters) below the ocean surface.
"The cable allows us to have more sensors and monitoring instruments than ever before, and it's happening in real time," said Chadwick, who also is affiliated with the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
In the past, researchers left battery-operated monitoring stations in place for several years, but were able to analyze the data only by retrieving those devices.
Pressure sensors detected that an eruption was underway on April 23. After monitoring hundreds then thousands of small earthquakes each day near Axial Seamount, they detected more than 8,000 tiny quakes over a 24-hour span on April 23, Chadwick said.
As midnight approached, pressure sensors detected the seafloor dropping - a sign that magma was erupting - and the swollen volcano was deflating like an emptying balloon. In total, the seafloor has dropped 8 feet (2.4 meters) in the past week.
Though the eruption has slowed, the volcano still seemed to be expelling magma as of Friday, he said, leaving Chadwick and scientists working with him wondering where the lava was going.
"We know it didn't erupt in the caldera, or crater, because that's where most of our sensors are, and they all survived," Chadwick said.
Temperature fluctuations and seismic readings are consistent with an eruption north of the volcano's crater, he said. "But we probably won't know until this summer, when we get out there with a ship and are able to look around."

About 100 bodies found in Nepal trekking village

KATHMANDU (Reuters) - Nepali police and local volunteers found the bodies of about 100 trekkers and villagers buried in an avalanche set off by last month's devastating earthquake and were digging through snow and ice for signs of dozens more missing, officials said on Monday.
The bodies were recovered on Saturday and Sunday at the Langtang village, 60 kilometers(40 miles) north of Kathmandu, which is on a trekking route popular with Westerners. The entire village, which includes 55 guesthouses for trekkers, was wiped out by the avalanche, officials said.
"Local volunteers and police personnel are digging through six-feet (deep) snow with shovels looking for more bodies," said
Gautam Rimal, assistant chief district officer in the area where Langtang is located.
The dead include at least 7 foreigners but only two had been identified, he said.
It was not clear how many people were in Langtang at the time of the avalanche but other officials said about 120 more people could be buried under the snow.
"We had not been able to reach the area earlier because of rains and cloudy weather," Uddhav Bhattarai, the district's senior bureaucrat, said by telephone on Sunday.
The April 25 earthquake has killed 7,276 people and wounded over 14,300, Nepal's government said.
At least 18 of the deaths were on Mount Everest, where avalanches hit the slopes of the world's highest peak. The government said on Monday that it had not closed the mountain to climbers, although the route up to the peak was damaged.
"Climbers at base camp don't think the route will be fixed anytime soon," said Tulsi Prasad Gautam, a senior official at Nepal's tourism department. "It's up to the climbers and the organizers who are at base camp to take a decision: we are not asking them to do one thing or another."
Climbers pay $11,000 each to climb Everest, and 357 were registered for this climbing season. Last year, the government extended permits when teams abandoned their expeditions after an avalanche killed 16 Sherpa mountain guides.
Gautam, who said last Thursday that a team could repair the route through the treacherous Khumbu icefalls in a week, said on Monday that small tremors were still being felt on Everest.
Last week, climbing firm Himalayan Experience decided to abandon its ascent, becoming the last big team to do so.
MIRACULOUS SURVIVORS
In other parts of the Himalayan nation, three people were pulled alive from the rubble of their home on Sunday, eight days after the earthquake, while several media outlets reported that a 101-year-old man was found alive in the rubble on Saturday.
U.S. military aircraft and personnel arrived in Nepal on Sunday and were due to begin helping ferry relief supplies to stricken areas outside the capital, a U.S. Marines spokeswoman said.
The contingent comprised eight aircraft, including one Huey and two C-130s, and between 100 and 120 personnel, spokeswoman Captain Cassandra Gesecki said.
The deployment is expected to ease the piling up of relief material at Kathmandu airport, Nepal's only major airport.
The United Nations said it is looking at a wider array of options for getting supplies to people in the most remote areas, including transporting provisions on the ground through India.
"We are still having problems getting things to people," said Orla Fagan, a spokeswoman for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. "There are people in very, very remote mountain villages."
On Sunday, the government restricted the landing of large cargo aircraft at the airport to limit damage to the stressed runway, said a U.N. official who declined to be named.
The United Nations has said 8 million of Nepal's 28 million people were affected by the quake, with at least 2 million needing tents, water, food and medicines over the next three months.
