Learning:How To Improve Your Brain

Picture of Human BrainThe human brain has an amazing capacity to learn and remember, It weighs about 1.4 kilograms and is roughly the size of a grape fruit yet it contains some 100 billion nervous or neuron cells all of which forms an incredible complex network just one neuron may be connected to 100,000 others.

          WHAT IS THE MEMORY
The memory can be define simply as the mental activity of recalling information  that you have learned or experienced. Memories can be short term or long-term memories.
Do you feel that you have a poor memory? It may be that you have bad habits when it comes to taking and processing information, here are tested measures you can take today to improve your memory.
(1)           BRAIN EXECISE
Memory like muscular strength is a “use it or loose it” proposition, the more you work out your brain, the better will you be able to process and remember information, Novelty and sensory stimulation are the foundation of brain exercise.
“nuerobic” exercise-an aerobic exercise for your brain that forces your to use your faculties in usual ways, like showering or getting with your eye closed, take a course in subject you know litter about, learn a new game or strategy, this and more are among the practical ways to exercise the brain.

GENERAL GUILD LINES TO IMPROVE YOUR MEMORY
Pay attention
Tailor information acquisition to your learning style involves as many sense as possible
Relate information to what you already know organize and be able to interpret complex material rehash information frequently and “over-learn” be motivated and keep positive attitude

            PAY ATTENTION
you can’t remember something you have never learned and you can’t learn something –that is encoded in your brain-if you don’t pay attention to it, it takes about 8 seconds of focus to process a piece of information through your hippocampus and into the appropriate memory center. So, no multi tasting when you need to concentrate! If you are easily distracted, try to receive information in a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted.
TAILOR INFORMATION ACQUISATION TO YOUR LEARNING STYLE
Most people are visual learners, they learn best by reading or otherwise seeing what it is they have to know, but  some are auditory learners who learn better by listening to it until they remember it, so suit yourself.

INVOLVE AS MANY SENSES AS POSSSIBLE
Even if you are a visual learner, read out loud what to remember, if you can recite rhythmically, even better, try to recite information to colors, textures, smells and taste, the physical act writing information can help to imprint if into your brain,
RELATE INFORMATION TO WHAT YOU ALREADY KNOW
Connect new data to information you already know, remember whether it is new material that builds on previous knowledge or something as simple as an address of someone who lives on a street where you already know someone.

ORGANIZE INFORMATION
Write things down in address books and date books; take note on material that is more complex and reorganize the note into categories later. Use both words and pictures in learning information.

UNDERSTAND AND BE ABLE TO INTERPRET COMPLEX INFORMATION
For more complex material focus on understanding the basic ideas rather than memorizing isolated details, be able to explain it to someone else in your own words.

REHEARSE INFORMATION FREQUENTLY AND OVER LEARN
Review what you have learned the same day you learned it and at intervals thereafter, what researchers call “spaced rehearsal” is more effective than cramming if you are able to “over learn” information so that recalling it becomes seconds to nature, so the better.

HEALTHY HABITS TO AMPROVE YOUR MEMORY
(1). REGULAR EXERCISE: it increase oxygen to the brain, it reduces the risk of disorder that result to memory loss, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease
(2). GOOD SLEEPING HABITS: sleep is necessary for memory consolidation .sleep disorders like insomnia and sleep appanage leaves you tired and unable to concentrate during the day
(3). NOT SMOKING: smoking heightens the risk of vascular disorder that can cause stroke and constrict arteries that

deliver oxygen to the brain. Wishing you the best.

          TO IMPROVE IN YOUR GRADES
(i)                  Form an insatiable appetite for study
(ii)                Read at a convenient time if possible early in the morning or mid-night.
(iii)               Attend 99% of your classes because many lecturers set the question right from their lecture note
(iv)              Review every lecture note when you return home from school
(v)                Make sure you have a plain sheet or 40 leaves exercise book, use it to review each of your study session.
Summaries without reading from material.

·          Avoid over cramming it embarrass you in exam hall
·         Have a workable time table and try your best to follow it up.
·         Avoid 11th hour preparation for exams, begin  exam preparation from the beginning of the semester
·         Review past questions before any exams, it will you an advantage especially if the same lecturer is involved.
